A Sustainable Program
Teaching Environmental Responsibility From An Early Age
At Nurtured Education & Care, sustainability is part of everyday learning. Our Sustainable Program helps children build respect for nature through simple, hands-on experiences they can see, touch, and understand. From caring for gardens to sorting recyclables, children learn that their choices matter. We keep it practical. We keep it age-appropriate. Most of all, we make it part of daily life.
Not A Theme Week, But A Way Of Life
Sustainability at Nurtured Education & Care is not a one-off activity.
It is woven into the way we use resources, set up our learning spaces, plan outdoor experiences, and talk with children about the world around them.
Children learn that caring for the environment does not need to feel big or complicated. It can start with small choices. Turning off a tap. Watering a plant. Sorting paper from plastic. Using scraps for compost. Asking, "Can we use this again?"
These everyday moments help children feel connected to nature and confident that they can make a difference.
A Centre Built With Nature In Mind
Our purpose-built centre reflects our commitment to the environment. We design our spaces to feel open, bright, calm, and connected to nature. Children have access to outdoor areas where they can move, explore, observe, and take part in real sustainability practices. Our centre includes:
Children are encouraged to notice their surroundings. The light. The soil. The plants. The weather. The insects. The changes from one day to the next.
Sustainability Children Can See & Do
Children learn best by doing. That is why our Sustainable Program gives them real, simple ways to take part in caring for the environment.
Garden Care
Children help with planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and caring for vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Gardening teaches patience, responsibility, and where food comes from. It also gives children the joy of watching something grow because they helped care for it.
Composting
Children learn how food scraps can turn into soil and help plants grow again. This makes waste feel visible and meaningful. It also helps children understand that some things can have a second life.
Recycling & Sorting
Children practise using colour-coded bins to sort materials and talk about what can be reused, recycled, or placed in the right bin.
This builds early decision-making skills and helps sustainability become part of their routine.
Awareness
We teach children simple habits such as turning off taps, switching off lights, using water with care, and noticing when resources are needed or not. These small actions teach children that care begins with awareness.
Reusing & Repurposing
Children create with recycled materials and are encouraged to ask, "Can this be used again?" before something is thrown away. This supports creativity, problem-solving, and respect for resources.
Nature Sets The Rhythm
Children experience how the environment changes across the year and how we can adapt with it. They learn through real seasonal experiences, including planting, harvesting, weather changes, outdoor observations, and conversations about animals, plants, food, and water. Our educators help children notice:
Children begin to see that they are part of a bigger system. And that they can care for it.
Sustainability Beyond Our Fence
Our Sustainable Program also connects children with the wider world. We help children understand that caring for the environment does not stop at the centre. It continues at home, in parks, in gardens, and in the community. We support this through:
We know every family is different. Sustainability does not have to look perfect. It just has to start somewhere.
Working With Families for Greener Habits
Children are more likely to build lasting habits when home and care work together.
That is why we share simple sustainability ideas families can use outside the centre too. This may include gardening activities, recycling tips, waste-free lunch ideas, nature walks, water-saving habits, or ways to reuse household materials for play.
We also welcome family knowledge.
If your family grows food, keeps a garden, follows cultural practices connected to nature, or has ideas to share, we would love to include them in our learning experiences.
Sustainability feels more meaningful when children see it in the people around them.
what parents say about their experience with us
Families often tell us they notice children bringing these habits home. A child reminds someone to turn off the tap. They ask to water the plants. They talk about compost. They notice rubbish at the park. They become curious about insects, flowers, rain, or where food comes from.
